Dr. Matthew Turnbull is an Assistant Professor of English in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (College of Undergraduate Studies). His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in English Literature from Baylor University, a B.A. in English Education from Washington State University, and a B.A. in Psychology with minors in Art & Music from Linfield College.
Prior to his current role, he spent 4 years in campus ministry (Washington State University/University of Idaho), 21 years as a bi-vocational pastor teaching literature and classics in Washington schools, and founded 'Alexandria Tutorials' in 2000—an online platform for homeschooled students emphasizing faith-based intellectual curiosity.
His research explores Renaissance literature through theological and semiotic lenses, focusing on Milton, George Herbert, and Lucy Hutchinson. Key themes include Augustine's influence, grace-nature dynamics, and literary representations of faith. Recent publications analyze Herbert's poetry (2024) and Twain's social philosophy (2022), with conference presentations at venues like the International Milton Symposium.
