Professor Matthew Tinsley is a faculty member at the University of Stirling's Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. He holds a PhD and BA from the University of Cambridge and leads research in evolutionary ecology with focus on host-parasite systems.
His research bridges laboratory and field studies, examining immunological and evolutionary interactions between insects and fungal pathogens. Key areas include:
- Biopesticide development for sustainable agriculture
- Immune system evolution in Drosophila
- Bumblebee ecology and conservation
- Genetic mechanisms of pathogen resistance
- Ecological impacts of radiation
He currently advises PhD students Jess Burrows (radiation effects on bumblebees), Mia Graham (whitefly resistance), and Rose McKeon (biopesticide resistance evolution). Research is supported by grants from BBSRC, NERC, and AHDB-BBSRC.
