Matthew Thompson is an Associate Professor at the Smith School of Business, Queen's University, specializing in Management Analytics. He holds cross appointments as a Distinguished Faculty Fellow of Operations Research and a Scotiabank Scholar at the Scotiabank Centre for Customer Analytics. His research focuses on real options theory applied to energy markets, finance, and infrastructure, with international recognition from awards such as the Canadian Operational Research Society's Best Student Paper Award and a Dantzig Dissertation Award finalist nod.
Dr. Thompson earned a PhD in Applied Mathematics (2003) from the University of Western Ontario, M.Sc. in Mathematics (1999) from the University of Guelph, and H.B.A. in Mathematics (1997) from Lakehead University. His professional experience includes roles as Associate Director of Financial Engineering at a major Canadian investment bank and as a risk management consultant for a power generation firm.
His research integrates real options theory with practical applications in energy storage valuation, counterparty credit risk, and public-private partnerships. He has published in top journals including Operations Research and Naval Research Logistics.
