Matthew Thomas is a Lecturer in Data Science & Analytics at The University of Manchester, affiliated with the Earth and Environmental Sciences department. His research focuses on environmental health, public health analytics, and data integration for exposure assessment. Previously, he held roles at the University of Exeter (Lecturer in Environmental Intelligence, 2022–2023; Research Fellow, 2021) and Imperial College London (Research Associate, 2019–2021). He holds a PhD in Statistical Applied Mathematics from the University of Bath (2020), alongside MRes and BSc degrees in the same field.
His work spans interdisciplinary topics including air pollution modeling, HIV prevention strategies, and global disease burden analysis. Notable contributions include studies on greenspace and COVID-19 severity, male circumcision for HIV prevention in South Africa, and innovative data integration frameworks for environmental exposure assessment.
Thomas collaborates extensively with institutions globally, focusing on applying statistical and computational methods to address public health challenges. He currently accepts PhD students and is involved in initiatives related to environmental intelligence and global health policy. His research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in education and environmental sustainability.
Recent projects include developing tools like Naomi for HIV epidemic modeling and advancing methods for high-resolution air pollution analysis. His work emphasizes bridging gaps between environmental data and actionable health policies, with a focus on vulnerable populations in sub-Saharan Africa and urban settings.
