Matthew Taylor is Professor of International Studies at the School of International Service, American University, with over 30 years of research focused on Latin America, particularly Brazil. He has lived in Brazil for more than a dozen years, including five as a tenured faculty member at the University of São Paulo.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. and M.P.P. from Georgetown University
- B.A. from Princeton University
Taylor's research centers on Brazilian political economy, corruption under democracy, and developmentalism, with strong policy-relevant analysis. His work bridges academic theory and real-world governance challenges in Latin America, emphasizing institutional decay and reform dynamics.
His notable scientific awards include:
- Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars Fellowship
- Adjunct Senior Fellow for Latin America Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations
Professor Taylor has authored five books and over fifty publications, including "Decadent Developmentalism: The Political Economy of Democratic Brazil" (2020) and "Brazilian Politics on Trial: Corruption and Reform Under Democracy" (2022). He teaches courses such as SIS-750 (Political Risk Analysis) and SISU-214 (Contemporary Latin America) at American University.
