Matthew Shifflett is an Instructional Associate Professor of Theatre Arts in the Department of Theatre & Film at the University of Mississippi, within the College of Liberal Arts. He is a theatre historian and writer with professional experience as a playwright, dramaturg, and actor.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Theatre from the University of Maryland-College Park (2014) and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Dr. Shifflett's research focuses on the role of theatrical performance in articulating regional, racial, and national identities in colonial and early America. He has extensively taught courses on race, gender, and ethnicity in American theatre and performance culture, bridging historical scholarship with artistic practice through historical plays exploring regional identity.
His notable recognition includes:
- Grant from the American Society for Theatre Research (2012)
Dr. Shifflett teaches core theatre curriculum including Theatre History I/II, Script Analysis, Playwriting, and Musical Theatre History. His international collaborations include work with DAH Teatar in Romania, and his artistic productions have been featured at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival.
