Matthew Schoell

Matthew Schoell is an Associate Professor and Director of the Undergraduate Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at Nazareth University. He is based in Peckham Hall 320 and can be reached at 585-389-2587 or mschoel6@naz.edu.

Schoell's teaching and research interests focus on clinical laboratory sciences, with particular expertise in clinical chemistry, clinical toxicology, metabolic testing, transfusion service/immunology, and complex antibody identification. He teaches several courses including Clinical Chemistry (his favorite), Clinical Blood Banking, Laboratory Medicine, The Science of Medicine, Clinical Laboratory Management and Operations, and Capstone in Clinical Laboratory Science. His educational philosophy emphasizes developing students' laboratory skills to become independent practitioners and preparing communication skills needed in healthcare settings for patient-focused care.

As Director of the Undergraduate Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program, Schoell plays a key role in preparing students for careers in medical technology/clinical laboratory sciences. He has created simulated laboratories in clinical classes to give students early opportunities to develop professional behaviors without pressure. During the pandemic, he helped train students to perform clinical testing while also serving as leaders and ambassadors who promote the work of clinical laboratory science to support community health.
