Dr. Matthew S. Peterson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at George Mason University, holding dual appointments in the Human Factors and Applied Cognition and Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience divisions. He is also part of the Neuroscience Ph.D. program. His research focuses on visual attention, eye movements, working memory, and brain plasticity, with funding from NIH, US Army, and Air Force. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and completed postdoctoral training at the Beckman Institute, University of Illinois.
Education: Ph.D. in Psychology (University of Kansas), Postdoctoral Training in Psychophysiology (Beckman Institute, UIUC). Research interests include cognitive training, human-robotic teaming, and EEG-based studies of working memory. He has supervised multiple graduate students and authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Psychological Science and Cerebral Cortex.
- Grants: Army Research Office (EEG feedback in decision-making), Provost’s Multidisciplinary Research Initiative (human-robotic command systems).
- Affiliations: Consulting editor, Psychonomic Bulletin & Review; member, Neuroscience Ph.D. program.
- Labs/Teams: Active in vision sciences, cognitive neuroscience, and human factors research groups.
His work bridges basic cognitive science and applied human factors, investigating how attention and memory can be enhanced through neurotechnology and training. Recent studies include EEG-based perceptual grouping and tDCS modulation of attentional performance.
