Matthew Purver is a Professor of Computational Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and a senior researcher at the Jožef Stefan Institute in Slovenia. He leads the Computational Linguistics Lab at QMUL and is the Industry and External Engagement Lead for the Centre for Human-Centred Computing. His work focuses on natural language processing (NLP), dialogue systems, and applications in mental health and social media analysis.
He teaches postgraduate courses on Natural Language Processing and Neural Networks in NLP. His research spans computational linguistics, semantics/pragmatics of language, and multimodal AI. He has contributed to datasets like CoRAL (abusive language detection) and studies on dementia monitoring via speech analysis.
Purver's recent work addresses challenges in LLMs, cross-lingual NLP, and ethical language use in organizational communication. He collaborates on projects like EMBEDDIA, analyzing migration narratives and news framing. His grants include funding for dementia research and computational social science initiatives.
He directs the Computational Linguistics Lab and is affiliated with the Centre for Multimodal AI. His work bridges academia and industry, emphasizing practical NLP applications in healthcare, social media, and organizational contexts.
