Matthew Pflaum is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Bergen's Department of Geography, affiliated with the SmallFishClim project examining climate impacts on small fish value chains in Lake Victoria regions. His research focuses on pastoralist insecurity and civilian vulnerabilities in the Sahel, integrating spatial analysis with socio-cultural factors. He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Florida (2024), where his dissertation developed the VIVI model to assess vulnerability variations in Mali's conflict zones.
Key research areas include political violence geographies, border dynamics, and climate adaptation in West Africa. Collaborations include OECD/SWAC projects on pastoralist violence and urban-rural conflict patterns. He contributes to the Sahel Research Group and African Networks Lab at UF, reviewing for African Studies Quarterly. Languages: Fluent Spanish, intermediate French, Hausa studies.
Teaching includes courses on African Geography and Population Dynamics. Professional roles include Student Director for the Africa Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers (AAG).
