Matthew Norton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Oregon's College of Arts and Sciences. His research bridges cultural sociology, historical sociology, and social theory, focusing on the role of culture in state power and institutional development.

Professor Norton's work examines the cultural dimensions of state formation, particularly through the lens of piracy and institutional violence in early modern maritime systems. He is currently completing a book on piracy and state development in the English/British empire.
Historical and comparative analysis dominates his recent publications, with 10 of the 15 most recent articles (2022-2025) exploring topics like colonial justice, institutional ambiguity, and the cultural politics of empire. His methodological interests include qualitative approaches and structural hermeneutics.
