Matthew Mitten is a Professor of Law and Executive Director of the National Sports Law Institute at Marquette University Law School. He teaches courses in Amateur Sports Law, Professional Sports Law, Antitrust Law, Torts, and Sports Sponsorship Legal and Business Issues Workshop. He previously served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2002 to 2004 and has held visiting positions at institutions worldwide, including the University of Melbourne, University of Barcelona, and University of Queensland.
His education includes a B.A. in Economics from The Ohio State University and a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Toledo College of Law, where he was a Note & Comment Editor for the University of Toledo Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif.
Mitten is a leading scholar in sports law, with research focusing on sports governance, legal and ethical issues in college athletics, antitrust implications in sports, and dispute resolution. His work bridges law, medicine, and sports policy, as evidenced by publications in top law reviews and journals like The New England Journal of Medicine. He has contributed significantly to regulatory frameworks in collegiate and professional sports.

He has also been actively involved in grant-like initiatives through the National Sports Law Institute and collaborative research projects.
He is a prominent arbitrator, serving with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (including ad hoc and anti-doping divisions for Olympic Games), American Arbitration Association, JAMS, and New Era panels. He has participated in over 70 sports-related arbitration cases, contributing to dispute resolution in international and domestic sports contexts.
