Matthew M. Poppe

Matthew M. Poppe, MD, FASTRO, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Utah and a physician-investigator at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). He directs the Radiation Oncology residency program and participates in multidisciplinary teams for pediatric, sarcoma, and breast cancers. As the primary radiation oncologist for pediatric oncology at HCI, he collaborates with the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and leads translational/clinical research.

Dr. Poppe holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Santa Clara University, an M.D. from Oregon Health Sciences University, and completed residencies in Family Practice (UC Davis) and Radiation Oncology (Rutgers Cancer Institute). He served in the US Air Force as a family and aerospace medicine physician from 2001–2006.

His research focuses on optimizing radiation therapy for breast cancer and pediatric malignancies. He co-chairs national trials including the phase III RT CHARM study on post-mastectomy radiation and a phase II trial exploring 9-day hypofractionated breast radiation. His work emphasizes safety, efficacy, and reduced treatment duration.
