Matthew M. Montemore is an Assistant Professor and Robert and Gayle Longmire Early Career Professor in Chemical Engineering at Tulane University's School of Science & Engineering, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. His research focuses on computational design of materials for energy applications, primarily using quantum chemical calculations, machine learning, and multiscale modeling to predict material properties and develop efficient screening methods.
Education:
- B.A. in Physics, Grinnell College (2009)
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, University of Colorado Boulder (2011)
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, University of Colorado Boulder (2014)
- Postdoctoral research at Harvard University in Engineering and Applied Sciences and Chemistry and Chemical Biology
Research interests span:
- Transition metal catalysts for industrial processes and clean energy technologies
- Combining computational methods with machine learning for materials prediction
- Design of catalysts, solar absorbers, and battery electrolytes
- Nanostructured materials synthesis and characterization
His 15 most recent publications (2024-2025) focus on computational catalysis, plasmonic photocatalysis, machine learning applications in materials science, and sustainable energy solutions. Trends include alloy catalyst design, reaction pathway identification, and educational STEM outreach.
Awards include the Robert and Gayle Longmire Early Career Professorship in Chemical Engineering.
He leads the Montemore Research Group, which collaborates with experimentalists to synthesize and test computationally designed materials. The group employs diverse computational tools including density functional theory and thermodynamic modeling.
