Matthew Lindauer is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center, CUNY. He holds a joint appointment in the Psychology Department’s Basic and Applied Social Psychology training area. Lindauer specializes in moral and political philosophy, moral psychology, and experimental philosophy, emphasizing empirical approaches to normative concepts. He earned his Ph.D. from Yale University in 2015 and a B.A. from New York University.
His research explores how empirical data informs ethical and political theory, particularly in contexts like immigration justice, climate change, and global poverty. He co-directs the PsyPhi Lab, a collaboration between philosophy and psychology faculty at CUNY, and is writing a book on normative concepts’ fruitfulness under contract with Oxford University Press.
Awarded the 2025 CUNY Award for Junior Faculty, Lindauer’s work bridges philosophy and empirical research, including experiments on moral motivation and charitable behavior. His publications appear in journals like Philosophical Studies and Journal of Moral Philosophy. Beyond academia, Lindauer is a musician, blending banjo, synth, and beats in projects like Myrna and solo albums.
