Matthew Layton is an Associate Professor and Chair of Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University. He is affiliated with the International Development Studies, Latin American Studies, and War and Peace Studies programs. His office is located at Bentley Annex 261 on the Athens Campus.
His research focuses on democratic legitimacy, political representation, and citizen empowerment in Latin America, with a particular emphasis on Brazil. He employs both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, often analyzing the impact of social assistance programs on political behavior and citizenship. His work is closely tied to the Latin American Public Opinion Project.
Dr. Layton teaches courses such as Politics of Development, Latin American Politics, Dictatorships and Democracies Around the World, Urban Politics, and Public Opinion, Political Participation, and Protest. He has published in leading political science and area studies journals including American Journal of Political Science, World Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Research & Politics, Latin American Politics and Society, and Journal of Politics in Latin America.
He earned his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 2015. His interdisciplinary affiliations reflect the breadth of his scholarly engagement across development, regional studies, and peace/conflict themes.
