Matthew Lambert is an Instructor in the Department of English at the University of Alabama. He holds a Ph.D. in Literary and Cultural Studies from Carnegie Mellon University (2017), an M.A. from the University of South Alabama (2009), and a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Asheville (2004). His research focuses on American and African American literature from the Civil War era to the present, ecocriticism, film, digital game studies, and genre fiction like science fiction and crime narratives.
He previously taught at Wabash College and Northwestern Oklahoma State University before joining UA in 2024. Key publications include his monograph The Green Depression: American Ecoliterature in the 1930s and 1940s (2020) and articles in Journal of Popular Film and Television, Journal of Midwest Modern Language Association, and Ralph Ellison in Context. He guest-edited the Spring 2021 issue of the Journal of Midwest Modern Language Association, dedicated to “Race, Ethnicity, and the Environment.”
His work bridges ecological concerns with literary analysis, examining themes like race, environment, and cultural identity in 20th-century texts. Current projects include explorations of Hemingway’s landscapes and the intersection of African American literature with environmental thought.
