Matthew L. Lister is a Professor of Physics at Purdue University, specializing in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and relativistic jets. He leads the MOJAVE program, a long-term VLBA monitoring initiative to study AGN jets' kinematics and polarization. His research focuses on AGN jets, gamma-ray emission, and young AGN systems like compact symmetric objects (CSOs). Lister earned his Ph.D. from Boston University in 1999, with earlier degrees from the University of Victoria (M.S.) and the University of Toronto (B.S.). He has held roles including Karl Jansky Fellow at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and Faculty Lecturer at the University of Virginia. His work includes studying blazars, narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, and supermassive black hole binaries. Notable grants include a NASA Fermi Guest Investigator award (2019) and MOJAVE's ongoing VLBA funding. He advised students like Mary Ann Hodge and contributed to major collaborations like TANAMI and IceCube. Lister transitioned to MathWorks in 2022 but remains active in AGN research.
