Matthew Kim is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Kentucky's College of Arts and Sciences, where he directs the Developing Minds Lab. His research program examines motivation and self-regulation development in K-12 and postsecondary students, with particular focus on school transitions and their impact on diverse learners. Kim earned his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Michigan in 2015, following an M.S. from the same institution and a B.A. in Economics and Psychology from New York University.
Kim's research investigates interpersonal and intrapersonal factors influencing how people understand, perpetuate, and cope with racism. He specializes in examining communication about racism in both same-race and cross-race contexts, and the subsequent outcomes for Black individuals' well-being. His work is characterized by commitment to inclusive, open, and reproducible science practices.
Analysis of Kim's recent publications reveals consistent focus on educational psychology themes, particularly in STEM education contexts. His work examines identity formation, mindset development, and belongingness across diverse student populations.
