Matthew Jones is an Assistant Professor of Musicology in the Department of Musicology at the School of Music, Oklahoma City University. His research centers on LGBTQ+ culture, politics, and music, with specialized focus on popular music, music video, disability studies, and HIV/AIDS history.
His educational background includes:
- PhD in Musicology from the University of Virginia (2014)
- Master’s degree in Musicology/Ethnomusicology from the University of Georgia
- Graduate Certificate in Women’s Gender, and Sexuality Studies from the University of Georgia
Dr. Jones examines music as a vehicle for social activism and cultural expression during crises, particularly the AIDS epidemic. His concept of 'crip virtuosity' challenges ableist frameworks in musical performance while analyzing artists like Joni Mitchell. His work bridges archival research, oral history, and critical theory to explore how music functions as both political tool and emotional archive.
His publications reveal consistent interdisciplinary engagement across Musicology, LGBTQ+ Studies, and Disability Studies, with strong emphasis on how popular music served as public health pedagogy, fundraising mechanism, and 'archive of feelings' during the AIDS crisis. The research demonstrates methodological rigor through decade-long archival projects and intersectional analysis of embodiment in performance.
Dr. Jones maintains active professional engagement beyond academia as a musical director and vocal coach for regional theaters across Virginia, Georgia, and Texas. He previously served as artistic director of Pride Chorus Houston, the city’s LGBTQ+ choir, demonstrating applied commitment to community-based musical practice.
