Dr. Matthew J.L. Hare is a Senior Research Fellow at Menzies School of Health Research, pursuing a PhD in diabetes epidemiology under Prof. Louise Maple-Brown. His work focuses on chronic disease prevention, particularly diabetes in Indigenous populations, and health disparities. He supervises postgraduate research and leads NT-based data linkage studies and health promotion projects in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.
Education: PhD candidate at Menzies School of Health Research; previous affiliations include Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute (Melbourne), Monash University School of Public Health, and the University of Cambridge’s MRC Epidemiology Unit.
Research interests span diabetes epidemiology, maternal health, chronic kidney disease, and Indigenous health equity. His recent articles examine diabetes treatment disparities, pregnancy outcomes in First Nations women, and perioperative mortality gaps.
Awards include NHMRC scholarships, the Douglas and Lola Douglas Medal, and grants from the International Diabetes Federation. He is principal investigator on studies addressing diabetes in pregnancy and health promotion in Indigenous languages.
Labs/Teams: Leads projects on data linkage and cultural health education, collaborating with institutions like the University of Cambridge and US CDC.
