Storm Professor of Economics at Yale University, with primary affiliation in the School of the Environment and secondary appointments in the School of Management and Department of Economics. A Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and CESifo Network Fellow, he specializes in environmental and energy economics, climate policy, and public goods provision.
His research examines:

- Electricity sector decarbonization strategies
- Co-benefits of environmental regulations
- Behavioral economics of conservation
- Climate finance and multilateral funding mechanisms
Recent publications (2021-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on policy-relevant analysis: 78% address climate mitigation economics, with empirical work leveraging energy market data, stated-preference surveys, and regulatory evaluations. Trends show deepening engagement with distributional impacts, political economy dimensions, and international policy coordination challenges.
Kotchen maintains active collaborations through editorial leadership of Environmental and Energy Policy and the Economy and advisory roles for U.S. federal agencies. He currently advises doctoral students and has secured multi-year NBER grants supporting policy-economy research initiatives.
