Matthew J. Hashim is an Associate Professor of Management Information Systems (MIS) at the Eller College of Management, University of Arizona. He also serves as Associate Director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and holds the Eller Fellow distinction. His roles include Chair of the Eller College Faculty and ESL Faculty Associate. He joined the university in 2011 after earning his PhD in MIS from Purdue University, with prior industry experience as a network administrator, programmer, and systems manager.
Dr. Hashim's research focuses on information security and privacy, digital piracy, experimental and behavioral economics, and electronic commerce. His work bridges technical cybersecurity issues with human behavioral factors, exploring topics like privacy valuation, data breach mitigation, and the impact of moral obligations on piracy intentions. He has also contributed to studies on digital content distribution strategies and online auction dynamics driven by influencer marketing.
His academic leadership extends to teaching courses such as MIS 304 (Using and Managing Information Systems) and MIS 416 (Information Security Risk Management). He has been recognized with multiple teaching awards, including the Dean’s Award for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence (2017-2018) and Eller Undergraduate Faculty Member of the Year (2015-2016). His research has been honored with the Best Published Paper Runner-Up award in Information Systems Research (2017) and a Best Paper Nomination at WITS 2017.
Hashim’s affiliations include the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and Digital Initiatives, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to advancing information systems. His recent work explores automation impacts on IT workforces and innovative password strength meter designs, demonstrating ongoing engagement with cutting-edge technological and societal challenges.
