Matthew I. Milowsky, MD, FASCO is The George Gabriel and Frances Gable Villere Distinguished Professor of Bladder and Genitourinary Cancer Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He serves as Section Chief of the Genitourinary Oncology Service, Co-Director of the Urologic Oncology Program, and Co-Leader of the UNC Lineberger Clinical Research Program. As a medical oncologist and clinical and translational researcher, Dr. Milowsky specializes in the treatment of patients with genitourinary cancers including bladder, testicular, kidney and prostate cancer.
Dr. Milowsky's primary research focus is on developing novel therapies for patients with urologic malignancies. He has particular expertise in designing clinical trials that utilize novel immunotherapies and integrated genomics approaches to characterize genitourinary cancers for genetic alterations that may represent targets for novel agents. His work has significantly advanced treatment options for patients with bladder cancer and other urothelial malignancies, with numerous clinical trials evaluating new drug combinations and treatment sequences.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on immunotherapy approaches for urothelial carcinoma, particularly with agents like nivolumab, enfortumab vedotin, and pembrolizumab. His research spans from early-phase clinical trials to large randomized studies and treatment guidelines, demonstrating leadership in establishing evidence-based practices in genitourinary oncology. The trend in his work shows increasing focus on combination therapies, biomarker-driven treatment selection, and management of treatment-related adverse events.
Dr. Milowsky has received numerous prestigious awards including Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (2021), multiple 'Top Doctor' designations from Castle Connolly, and the AACR Henry Shepard Bladder Cancer Research Award (2009). His consistent recognition as a top physician reflects both his clinical excellence and research contributions to the field.
As an educator, Dr. Milowsky has received multiple teaching awards including the Weill Cornell Medical College Hematology and Medical Oncology Faculty Teaching Award (2005) and The MSKCC Paul Sherlock Housestaff Teaching Award (2007). He has been involved in numerous clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and pharmaceutical companies, advancing the standard of care for patients with genitourinary cancers.
Dr. Milowsky leads the Multidisciplinary Urologic Oncology Clinic at UNC, where patients receive coordinated care from surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists during a single visit. His clinical practice and research are deeply integrated, allowing rapid translation of scientific discoveries into improved patient outcomes for those with bladder and other genitourinary cancers.
