Matthew Hughey is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Connecticut with affiliations in Africana Studies, American Studies, Race, Ethnicity, and Politics, and the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy. His research examines the persistence of racism and racial inequality through six key areas: identity formation, organizations, mass media, political engagements, science and technology, and public advocacy. Hughey holds international affiliate positions at the University of Cambridge, University of Barcelona, and Nelson Mandela University.
His work explores racial dynamics through projects like 'White Space/Time' investigating racialized temporal perceptions, and 'The Souls of White Folk (1920-2020)' analyzing Du Bois's foundational text. Research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Russell Sage Foundation, and Fulbright Commission.
Hughey's publications demonstrate consistent focus on racial representation in media, historical analysis of racial politics, and institutional racism. Recent work examines electoral politics, racialized media frameworks, and re-evaluations of landmark reports like the Kerner Commission. His 15 most recent articles primarily engage with racial identity construction across institutional contexts.
Hughey maintains active research collaborations exploring racial dynamics through multiple methodological approaches including ethnography, content analysis, and historical sociology.
