Matthew H. Bernstein is Goodrich C. White Professor of Film and Media at Emory University, where he has taught since 1989 and served as department chair from 2006-2021. He holds a PhD from University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MFA from Columbia University. His teaching spans film history, criticism, and specialized courses on Hitchcock, Kurosawa, and African-American representation in cinema.
Bernstein's research examines Hollywood studio history, censorship, and regional film reception, particularly in the American South. His publications include biographies of producer Walter Wanger and studies of the Leo Frank case's cinematic representations.
