Matthew Greaves is a Doctoral Candidate (ABD) in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and a sessional instructor in the Labour Studies Program. His research focuses on intersections of political economy, technological change, and Canadian history, particularly examining industrial capitalism's origins in British Columbia through 19th-century coal mining. He co-edits a 2018 special issue of the Canadian Journal of Communication on energy and Canadian communication.
- Education: B.A. Hons. (York), M.A. (York/Ryerson). His M.A. thesis critiqued iPad ontology and labor in Empire.
Research interests include energy policy, Marxist theory applications, and the political economy of technology. His work appears in Rethinking Marxism, International Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society, and New Proposals. Recent publications analyze communication dynamics in energy systems, technological determinism critiques, and class struggle's technological dimensions.
