Matthew Gombolay is an Associate Professor of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology, affiliated with the School of Interactive Computing and the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines (IRIM). His research focuses on robotics, artificial intelligence, human-robot interaction, and operations research, with a particular emphasis on explainable AI and multi-agent reinforcement learning.
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University (2011)

- Ph.D. in Autonomous Systems from MIT (2017)
Gombolay’s work addresses the development of intelligent systems for human-robot teaming in domains such as manufacturing and urban air mobility. He directs the CORE Robotics Lab, which prioritizes explainable AI, human-robot interaction, and dynamic coordination algorithms.
His scientific accolades include the DARPA Riser award, NASA Early Career Fellowship, and multiple best paper awards/finalists. He also co-leads a National Institutes of Health R01 grant focused on advancing machine learning in healthcare. Gombolay serves as an Associate Editor for Autonomous Robots and ACM Transactions on Human-Robot Interaction.
