Dr. Matthew E. West is a Term Assistant Professor of Global Affairs at George Mason University. Previously, he served in the Anthropology Department at The Chinese University of Hong Kong for four years. His research focuses on globalization’s intersections of legal and economic systems, particularly in Sinophone societies like Taiwan and China. He investigates intellectual property, scientific knowledge, and creative industries through ethnographic methods.
Education:
- PhD in Anthropology, Columbia University
- MPhil and MA in Anthropology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
- BA in Anthropology (with East Asian Studies Concentration), Davidson College
Research Interests: His work explores patents in the Taiwanese LED industry, cultural conceptions of piracy in Xi’an, and the knowledge economy. He employs participant observation, interviews, and semiotic analysis to study transnational flows of knowledge, property, and cultural production.
Teaching: Courses include Interdisciplinary Research Methods, Case Studies in Globalization: Property and Piracy, and Honors Program courses on social media and research principles.
