Matthew Dziennik is a Professor in the History Department at the United States Naval Academy. His research focuses on the global history of recruitment in the British Empire between 1756 and 1857, emphasizing how recruitment mechanisms reinforced British imperial authority, shaped colonial societies, and integrated Indigenous populations into state structures. His work highlights recruitment as a foundational tool of British imperial power.
His notable publication, *The Fatal Land* (Yale University Press, 2015), examines Gaelic-speaking Scottish Highlanders in the British Army and won the Highly Commended First Book Award. Dziennik’s research has been supported by prestigious institutions such as the Royal Historical Society, the Huntington Library, and the Kluge Center at the Library of Congress.
His current project explores the broader role of recruitment in consolidating British imperial power, analyzing its impact on political relationships, social structures, and coercive state mechanisms across colonies.
