Matthew Denwood is an Associate Professor in Quantitative Veterinary Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Copenhagen's Section for Animal Welfare and Disease Control. Previously, he held positions as Lecturer in Production Animal Health at the University of Glasgow (2012-2014), Postdoctoral Research Assistant (2011-2012), and Research Fellow with EPIC - The Scottish Government's Centre of Excellence in Epidemiology (2010-2011).
Dr. Denwood's research focuses on the development and application of computationally intensive statistical techniques to complex biological problems, with particular expertise in Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods and stochastic modeling for disease transmission. His work spans multiple epidemiological contexts including parasite distribution modeling, disease surveillance systems, and the analysis of count data such as faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT). His methodological contributions have significant applications in veterinary epidemiology and public health.
His most recent publications demonstrate continued expertise in applying advanced statistical methods to veterinary and epidemiological problems, with a 2020 paper on livestock diagnostic test uptake using game theory and a 2015 paper on Bayesian methods for heritability estimation. His work shows a consistent trajectory of developing sophisticated statistical approaches to address complex biological questions in animal health.
Dr. Denwood has made significant software contributions to the field through the development of the R packages runjags and bayescount, which implement MCMC methods for statistical analysis and have been widely adopted by researchers internationally. These tools have facilitated the application of advanced Bayesian methods in veterinary epidemiology and related fields.
