His research focuses on literary criticism, postcolonial studies, and contemporary fiction, with particular attention to Irish and Australian literature. He has explored themes such as utopia/dystopia, cultural theory, and the intersection of art and identity.
His work spans analyses of authors like Anne Enright, Tony Birch, Cormac McCarthy, and Colm Tóibín, examining topics ranging from family dynamics in modern Irish fiction to environmental narratives and solipsism in cultural contexts. Ryan has also contributed to educational research, investigating student experiences of assessment in higher education.
His publications include journal articles and book chapters addressing themes like ruin aesthetics, postmodernism, and the aestheticized self. Ryan’s interdisciplinary approach bridges literary analysis with broader sociocultural critiques.
