Dr. Matthew Coxon is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Lead for the BSc Psychology at York St John University, within the School of Education, Language and Psychology. His research focuses on the psychological underpinnings of immersive virtual reality (VR), particularly spatial presence and its applications in healthcare, education, and pain management. He holds a PhD from Lancaster University and a BSc from the University of Bristol.
Education qualifications include a BSc (Hons) in Experimental Psychology (University of Bristol, 2002), a PhD in Cognitive Psychology (Lancaster University, 2007), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (York St John University, 2011).
Research interests emphasize VR’s impact on spatial presence, cognitive processes, and practical applications. He has published widely on topics such as VR therapy for PTSD, gender differences in spatial awareness, and VR’s role in pain management. His book Cognitive Psychology (2012) is a key educational resource.
Teaching includes modules on cognition, research methods, and memory improvement. He is a Postgraduate Research Supervisor and has contributed to academic boards, including the Psychology Teaching Review and the British Psychological Society’s Division of Academics, Researchers, and Teachers.
