Professor Matthew Costa serves as Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS), and holds an Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon position at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Previously, he was Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedics at the University of Warwick before his appointment to Oxford in 2015.
Professor Costa's primary research focus centers on the clinical and cost effectiveness of musculoskeletal interventions, with particular emphasis on hip and wrist fractures, surgical site infections, and rehabilitation protocols. His work spans clinical trials, systematic reviews, and cellular-level investigations into tendon healing. As Chief Investigator, he leads multiple randomized trials funded by the UK National Institute of Health Research, including the WHiTE (WArwick and NIHR HEE Trauma Evaluation) series and DRAFFT studies.
His extensive publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to orthopaedic trauma literature, with recent work (2023-2025) focusing on antibiotic cement for hip hemiarthroplasty, pressure sore prevention, and cellular mechanisms in tendon repair. His research has significant clinical impact, directly informing guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
