Dr. Matthew Coak is an Assistant Professor at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Birmingham. He holds a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship and leads research in experimental condensed-matter physics with a focus on high-pressure techniques. His work involves studying 2D magnetic materials and their transition to 3D systems under compression, exploring structural, magnetic, and transport properties to discover novel material phases.
Research collaborations include partnerships with Paragraf Ltd, advancing graphene-based electronics for quantum computing and next-generation 2D materials. Funded by a UK Innovation semiconductor scale-up grant, his group develops practical applications for graphene sensors and transistors.
- Research Themes: 2D materials, quantum technologies, nanoscale heterostructures
- Key Collaboration: Paragraf Ltd (graphene manufacturing)
Awards: UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship (active).
Grants: UK Innovation semiconductor scale-up grant, UKRI Fellowship funding.
Labs/Teams: Leads a research group focused on materials under extreme conditions and commercialization pathways for 2D materials.
