Dr. Matthew Carotenuto is an Associate Professor of History and Coordinator of African Studies at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. He also serves as the Hanson Associate Dean of International and Intercultural Studies and oversees the Kenya Semester Program (KSP). His research focuses on East African history, transnational African diasporic experiences, and the intersections of ethnicity, gender, and conflict. He holds a B.A. in History from SUNY Cortland and a Ph.D. in African History from Indiana University.
Carotenuto’s work bridges academic and public engagement, including co-authoring Obama and Kenya: Contested Histories and the Politics of Belonging (2016) and publishing in outlets like The Washington Post and Politico. He actively promotes study abroad initiatives and has coordinated KSP since his time as an alumnus. His scholarly articles analyze colonial and contemporary Kenyan histories, particularly around ethnicity, sport, and identity politics.
Outside academia, he volunteers in wrestling coaching and enjoys Kenyan cuisine and outdoor activities with his wife, Jolene.
