Matthew Cancian is an Associate Professor at the Naval War College, specializing in Security Studies and Comparative Politics. A Marine Corps veteran with deployment experience in Afghanistan, he holds a PhD in Political Science from MIT (2022), a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School, and a BA in History from the University of Virginia.

His research focuses on military operations, combatant motivations, and data-driven approaches to security studies, including a notable survey of 2,301 Kurdish fighters (Peshmerga) during the war against the Islamic State. He also analyzes non-state governance and asymmetric military strategies.
