Matthew C. Cave, M.D., FAASLD is a Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, and Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He serves as Vice Chair for Research and holds the title of Distinguished University Scholar. His clinical expertise includes Hepatology, Liver Transplantation, and Toxin-induced Hepatotoxicity. Dr. Cave’s research focuses on environmental and occupational liver diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and the mechanisms underlying drug-induced liver injury.
Education & Training:

- Residency: Washington University School of Medicine in Internal Medicine (2004)
- Fellowship: University of Louisville Hospital in Gastroenterology (2007)
Research Interests:
Dr. Cave investigates the intersection of environmental toxins, metabolic conditions, and liver disease. His work spans molecular mechanisms of hepatotoxicity, the impact of microplastics on liver health, and the role of metals in cardiovascular disorders. He employs multiomics approaches to study disease pathways in animal models of alcohol and chemical exposure.
