Matthew Berkman is an Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at Oberlin College's College of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on American Jewish history, race and ethnicity, the Israel-Palestine conflict, and evolving definitions of antisemitism. He holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (2018), an MA and BA from New York University. His work explores topics like Jewish federations' role in shaping pro-Israel politics and the transnational infrastructure of peace movements.
Key publications include studies on Jewish critics of Zionism, antisemitism paradigms, and philanthropy reform. He has presented at institutions like UCLA Law School and Grand Valley State University. Berkman’s 2020 Walter Dean Burnham Dissertation Prize-winning work, Coercive Consensus, examines postwar American Jewish political infrastructure. He teaches courses such as Jews and Power and The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.
His current book project investigates shifting American Jewish understandings of antisemitism. Berkman actively engages in academic discourse through conferences and publications in journals like Jewish Social Studies and American Jewish History.
