Matthew Becker is a Professor and the Conrey Endowed Chair of Hydrogeology at the Earth Science Department of California State University Long Beach. His work combines field studies, geophysical tools, and computational modeling to address challenges in groundwater resources and geothermal energy systems.
Education:
- Ph.D., Civil Engineering, University of Texas Austin (1996)
- M.S., Civil Engineering, University of Texas Austin (1990)
- B.S., Geology, Michigan State University (1988)
His research focuses on hydrogeology and hydrology, particularly the characterization of fractured bedrock aquifers, submarine groundwater discharge in tropical reefs, and innovative applications of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) for hydromechanical studies. Recent projects include High Speed Rail Hydrogeology, Catalina Island Hydrology, and Fiber Optic DAS for Hydraulic Testing.
Notable Awards:
- Conrey Endowed Chair of Hydrogeology
Becker leads the Hydrology Lab at CSULB, which advances water systems research through cutting-edge tools like fiber optic sensors. He teaches courses such as Hydrogeology (GEOL 477/577) and Groundwater Modeling (GEOL 579). His lab also participates in the Darcy Lecture Tour and hydrogeophysics internships.
