Matthew Bashton

Matthew Bashton is an Assistant Professor in the Applied Sciences Department at Northumbria University. As a computational biologist, his research spans protein domains, protein structure and function, ligand interactions, high-throughput sequence analysis, genome analysis, and biomarker discovery.

Research focuses on:

• Development of bioinformatics tools for protein annotation and omics data management
• Genomic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 evolution and transmission dynamics
• Cancer genomics and leukemia evolution mechanisms

His articles demonstrate strong focus on developing computational methods for biological challenges, particularly in virology and cancer genomics. Recent work includes SARS-CoV-2 surveillance studies and bioinformatics tool development.

Holds a PhD in Bioinformatics from the University of Cambridge and contributes to the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE) at Northumbria.
