Matthew Bailey is an Associate Professor and Discipline Chair in the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University's School of Humanities. He is affiliated with the Centre for Workforce Futures and the Housing and Urban Research Centre. His research focuses on retail history, oral history methodologies, and the built environment. Bailey’s work includes seminal studies on Australian shopping centre development and retail property sectors, as well as global retail innovations. He has authored influential books like Managing the Marketplace: Reinventing Shopping Centres in Post-War Australia (2020) and co-edited volumes on oral history in business contexts.
Key research interests include retail spatial dynamics, consumerism, and the historical interplay between business practices and urban development. His projects span archival and oral history studies, such as analyses of supermarketing in Australia and 1980s retail power dynamics. Bailey has received a teaching award for his contributions to student learning and is active in public history projects, including corporate histories and media commentary on retail topics.
