Matthew Anderson is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, affiliated with the Center for Genomic Science Innovation. Previously at The Ohio State University (2016–2022), he transitioned to UW-Madison in 2023. He holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Stanford University (2009). His research focuses on understanding the genomic and evolutionary basis of fungal pathogenicity in Candida albicans, particularly the role of subtelomeric gene families like TLO in virulence and host adaptation. He also investigates the role of eukaryotic microbes in human health, including their contributions to rheumatoid arthritis in Indigenous populations.
Key achievements include the CZI Science Diversity Leadership Award (2022) for studying microbial eukaryotes in rheumatoid arthritis, tenure at OSU (2022), and NIH-funded research on fungal genetics. His lab has mentored over 15 students, including PhD candidates and postdoctoral scholars. Recent projects involve analyzing gene family evolution, aneuploidy-driven phenotypic shifts, and developing metagenomic tools to study understudied microbial eukaryotes.
Publications span topics like parasexual evolution in Candida, biofilm dispersal mechanisms, and ethical frameworks for Indigenous genomic research. The lab actively collaborates with institutions globally and plans to expand at UW-Madison, focusing on fungal pathogenesis and microbiome dynamics.
