معرفی
Matthew Allen is a Professor and Chair of the Chemistry Department at Wayne State University, within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on lanthanide chemistry, particularly developing MRI contrast agents and water-tolerant catalysts for organic reactions. Allen’s work bridges inorganic chemistry with biological and analytical applications, emphasizing molecular imaging and sustainable catalysis.
Education:
- B.S., Purdue University, 1998
- Ph.D., California Institute of Technology, 2004
- National Institutes of Health (NIH) Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2004–2007
Research Interests:
Allen’s lab explores two major themes: (1) overcoming barriers in lanthanide-based MRI contrast agents, particularly for hypoxia imaging, and (2) elucidating mechanisms of lanthanide-catalyzed organic reactions. Projects involve synthesizing inorganic/organic compounds, characterizing them via NMR, mass spectrometry, and fluorescence spectroscopy, and testing in vitro/in vivo.
Recent Trends in Publications:
Recent work emphasizes Eu(II)-based contrast agents for hypoxia detection, sustainable recovery of rare earth elements from waste (e.g., coal ash), and electrochemical filtration of gadolinium from medical waste. These studies reflect a dual focus on advancing diagnostic tools and addressing environmental challenges.
Labs/Teams:
Research is conducted in the Allengroup at Wayne State, with collaborations in materials science, biomedical imaging, and green chemistry.
