Matteo Cargnello is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in Materials Science and Engineering. He leads the Cargnello Group, focusing on nanocrystal-based solutions for energy and environmental challenges, including CO2 capture/conversion, emission control, and sustainable hydrogen production. His research employs advanced synthetic and characterization techniques to engineer catalysts with enhanced stability and selectivity.
Education: PhD in Nanotechnology (2012, University of Trieste), postdoc at the University of Pennsylvania. Joined Stanford in 2015 as faculty.
Research emphasizes energy sustainability, with projects on methane oxidation, photocatalytic systems, and polymer-nanocrystal hybrids. Key awards include the Sloan Fellowship (2018), Mitsui Catalysis Award (2020), and ACS Early Career Catalysis Award (2022).
Advises PhD students Henry, Alex, and Sydney. Teaches courses in catalysis, microkinetics, and chemical engineering fundamentals. Active in developing sinter-resistant catalysts and scalable CO2 conversion technologies.
