Matt Read

Matt Read serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary. His affiliations include:

• Associate Member, Clinical and Translational Research Group
• Full Member, Pain and Animal Welfare Research Group

He teaches courses across all four years of the DVM program, including Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology (Year 1), Pharmacology (Year 2), Anesthesiology and Clinical Skills (Year 3), and Anesthesia Clinical Rotations (Year 4).

Dr. Read's educational journey:

• DVM with distinction, University of Saskatchewan, Canada (1998)
• Residency in Veterinary Anesthesiology
• MVSc (Master of Veterinary Science)
• Board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) in 2002

His research interests span Clinical Science and Veterinary Medical Education. Specifically, he investigates:

• Small animal anesthesia, focusing on thermoregulation during anesthesia and maintaining body temperature using new technologies and drugs
• Regional anesthesia techniques involving local anesthetic injections around target nerves to block pain transmission
• Improvements in veterinary medical education through admissions processes, effective student feedback, and procedural skills training

Dr. Read has delivered over 80 lectures and workshops internationally and received multiple teaching awards.

He maintains active clinical practice in Calgary clinics while collaborating with Alberta veterinarians and their staff.
