Matt Pearson is a Professor of Linguistics at Reed College, where he has taught since 2001. He serves as a key figure in the Linguistics Department and the Division of Philosophy, Religion, Psychology, and Linguistics, having held various leadership roles including Department Chair and Division Chair. His expertise spans formal syntax, morpho-syntactic typology, semantics, and field methods.

Research interests focus on Malagasy syntax, Austronesian languages, derivational syntax, and language universals. Notable work includes studies on Malagasy's verb-initial syntax and constructed languages (e.g., alien language for NBC's Dark Skies).
