Matt O'Regan serves as Professor of Marine Geology at Stockholm University's Department of Geological Sciences. He joined the department as a Research Scientist in 2012 after two years as a Lecturer at Cardiff University in the UK.
His research expertise spans Marine Geology and Paleoceanography with particular focus on Arctic Ocean systems. O'Regan specializes in reconstructing the Quaternary glacial and environmental history of the Arctic Ocean using marine sediment cores and geophysical data. His work addresses the long-standing challenge of dating Arctic Ocean sediments across geological timescales from modern processes to those active tens of millions of years ago.
O'Regan co-manages the department's core-processing laboratory and currently represents Sweden on the Science Support and Evaluation Committee for the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling. His methodological approach integrates sedimentological analysis with geophysical techniques to understand both contemporary and historical Arctic environmental conditions.
His doctoral work completed in 2007 at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island focused on the paleoceanographic and geologic development of the Arctic Ocean during the Cenozoic era, establishing the foundation for his ongoing research trajectory in polar marine geology.
