Matt Malsky is a Professor and the Tina Sweeney, M.A. ’49, Endowed Chair in Music at Clark University. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University of Chicago and a B.A. from Brandeis University. His roles include Director of the Higgins Institute for Arts and Humanities, Director of the Media Culture & the Arts program, and organizer of the Geller Jazz series. Malsky’s research explores intersections of music, technology, and culture post-WWII, with publications in ethnomusicology, film studies, and journals like *Search* and *World Picture Journal*.
His creative works include the chamber opera *A Dill Pickle* (based on Katherine Mansfield’s short story), string quartets, and film soundscapes. Notable performances feature collaborations with artists like the Penderecki String Quartet and the Radius Ensemble. Awards include NEH grants and recognition from ASCAP and the American Composer’s Forum.
Teaching focuses on media theory, musical acoustics, and interdisciplinary arts. Recent grants support integrating climate and environmental humanities into Clark’s curriculum. Malsky’s work bridges composition, technology, and cultural critique, reflecting his dual expertise as a scholar and artist.
