Dr Matt J Dunn is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at Cardiff University's School of Optometry and Vision Sciences. He is a GOC registered optometrist, Member of the College of Optometrists (MCOptom), and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Dr Dunn serves as the founder and general coordinator of the International Society for Clinical Eye Tracking (ISCET) and is the author of the popular ophthalmology e-textbook Dunn Vision Reference.
His research focuses on exposing the mechanisms underlying disorders of visual perception, including blindsight, Charles Bonnet Syndrome (hallucinations), visual dyslexia, and infantile nystagmus. He is particularly interested in the role of involuntary eye movements in perceptual (in)stability, with significant contributions to the clinical application of eyetrackers in routine eyecare and neurology practice. His publication record spans from 2014 to present with over 27 peer-reviewed articles, primarily concentrated in the areas of nystagmus, eye tracking technology, and visual perception assessment.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on developing standardized methodologies for eye tracking research, improving diagnostic techniques for visual disorders, and investigating the genetic and physiological basis of nystagmus. His work bridges clinical practice with technological innovation, particularly in adapting eye tracking for practical clinical applications in ophthalmology and neurology.
Dr Dunn has served as a journal reviewer for numerous publications including Behavior Research Methods, Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Science, and Scientific Reports, and as a grant reviewer for organizations such as the Medical Research Council and Macular Society. He has delivered invited talks internationally at institutions including Johns Hopkins University, Erasmus MC, and UC Berkeley.
As an educator, he delivers the Perception lecture series, runs orthoptics teaching clinics, and teaches multiple modules in the Optometry program at Cardiff University. He is currently supervising PhD students Khawlah Alfaifi and Bader Almagren, with previous supervisees including Dr Katherine Ward (research on infantile nystagmus), Dr Mason T Wells, and Dr Nikita Thomas.
